ASHBURTON RACING CLUB
CONCLUDING MEETING OF SEASON
The Ashburton course was soft on Saturday, and liberal use of straw was made in the enclosure, as a result of heavy overnight rain, but the weather was bright and fine, and from a racing point of view the fixture provided a good finish to the Club’s season. The totalisator turnover for the seven-race card was £4,848 10 -, against £6,442 at the corresponding meeting last year. The decrease was acocunted for in part by a reduced attendance, and other factors were the institution of two inquiries which locked up nearly £ISOO for two races, and a poor field in the steeplechase. The chief stake of the day attached to the Dromore Steeplechase, was annexed by Membo, who returned to F. Trilford’s stable only a few weeks ago, and made a successful entry into steeplechase company. The hot favourite Punchestown, gave a rather disappointing display. In the hurdle race Verden displayed further improvement, and despite one bad jump brought his record to two wins in three starts over battens. The two principal flat races were won by the stable-mates Grand Review and Great Star, the last-named registering his first win of the season. Top Rank, a three-year-cld from C. Emerson’s stable, was first under the wire in the Moreton Hack Handicap, but after a protracted inquiry was reduced to second place by the judicial committee on the ground of interference with the favourite Knockfin. This reversal of placings credited Knockfin with her fifth win in an equal number of starts. The first and second awards made by the judge were reversed to the next race eiso, De Soto, who broke twenty yards from home and galloped past the post, being placed second to Great Seaman. No great surprise would have been evinced had De Soto been pegged back to third, as Llewellyn’s Pet was very close up. The second trotting event went to Llewellyn’s Pride, who got through on the rails to beat Bide-a-Wee and Wild Dreams in a good finish. Following are details of the racing:— HINDS HURDLES.
