WAR DEBTS

NOTIFICATIONS SENT BY UNITED STATES.

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received May 23, 9.10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 22

Formal notification in the form of Notes, which are always sent by the United States to debtor nations 30 days before the instalments on war debts fall due, have not yet been dispatched to the 13 nations that have instalments of 175,000,000 dollars payable on June 15. No explanation was given at the State Department for the fact that the notifications are now seven days overdue, except that no debit listings had been received from the Treasury Department. The delay in the sending of the Notes was said in well-informed circles, however, to have been deliberate to await the disclosure of the President’s views on the question in his war debt message to Congress this week.

Discussions have been held by the President with Sir Ronald Lindsay, British Ambassador at Washington, concerning Britain’s instalment, but there is no confirmation of the reports that a compromise settlement has been agreed upon.
