LABOUR REPRESENTATION COMMITTEE

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Labour Representation Committee was held on Saturday last. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr W. Tutton; vice-president, Mr R. Boucher; members of executive, Messrs Young, Ball, and Mcßeath; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. R. Snedden; auditor, Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P. It was agreed that a donation be made to the Holland Memorial Fund, also that propaganda literature by Mr F. Langstone, M.P., and Mrs E. R. McCombs, M.P., be procured. Attention was drawn to the fact of the February wool sale being cut out next year. It was agreed to support the Farmers’ Union in its protest against this action, and to suggest that it call a public meeting of farmers, business people, and workers interested, to enter a protest. A discussion took place on the weight test versus baking test of grain and flour, and Mr Carr was asked to investigate the matter further and report at the next meeting. Reference was made to the misunderstanding that has arisen between the Hospital Board and other local bodies regarding financial assistance to the Central Relief Society, and it was decided to urge upon all concerned the necessity of co-operating in every way possible on behalf of the unemployed for the coming winter. Mr Carr, in giving his report for the year, said in addition to attending two sessions of Parliament (January 26 to March 10 and September 21 to December 22), including meetings of the Education Committee and the Public Petitions (M to Z) Committee, and performing the regular duties of a Member of Parliament in his own constituency at all times, including attendance at meetings of the local Unemployment Committee when he was in town, he had addressed during the year as National vice-president of the New Zealand Labour Party, more than 40 political meetings in various parts of New Zealand, with most encouraging results. He also attended seven meetings of the National Executive of the Labour Party in Wellington, and the annual conference at Auckland.
