FAIRVIEW.
VALEDICTORY SOCIAL. A valedictory social was tendered to Mr James Hunter, who is leaving the district, after a sojourn of almost 40 years, to live in Timaru. The social room of the Fairview Hall was com-, fortably filled with friends and wellwishers. The first part of the evening was spent in progressive euchre, the winners being Mrs J. Husband and Mr Jock Wallace. After supper. Mr Duncan McPhedran, who claimed 38 years’ close acquaintance with the guest of the evening, was voted to the chair. Messrs G. Selby, G. Butchers, J. Gibson, J. Maxwell, S. Kingston, W. Mack, junr., F. Smith, H. Abbott, and others, spoke of the fine characteristics of Mr J. Hunter. Almost half a century ago Mr Hunter took up a farm in the district, and by conscientious, systematic management developed his land to a high state of production. He had not taken a prominent personal part in the activities of the district, but his name always figured prominently on- every subscription list for any worthy cause. Both the local hall and school funds had always benefited by his generosity. As a neighbour and employer the various speakers praised Mr Hunter highly. He was always just, and recognised a fair deal and an honest day’s work. Mr Joe Gibson, who made the presentation of a travelling rug and sil-ver-mounted walking stick, expressed his pleasure at being present and as a one-time neighbour said he had always held Mr Hunter in the highest esteem. He heartily endorsed the previous speakers’ remarks, and concluded by wishing the guest of the evening a long and happy retirement, continued robust health and God’s blessing.
