RICCARTON NOTES

Special to “ The Herald ” CHRISTCHURCH, May 22.

H, Cutts will leave for the north this week with Copyist and Scarlet Rambler who are in good fettle for their engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting. Rebel Star looks in excellent health and is doing well in fast work. His connections do not greatly appreciate the high opinion of the Auckland handicapper shown in the hack race on the opening day at Ellerslie. but it is probable that J. S. Shaw will take him north, leaving about the end of this week. L. J. Ellis has made arrangements to ride at the Auckland winter meeting, when he should be assured of plenty of engagements. Copyist may be one of his mounts.

The Riccarton jockey, A. E. Ellis, has not yet completed arrangements for the King’s Birthday meetings, but it is practically certain that he will be riding either at Auckland or Otaki. The apprentice, H. McKinnon, will be at the Auckland winter meeting where he should have plenty of riding opportunities. He has been engaged to handle the Riccarton hack, Scarlet Rambler, in her engagements. The three-year-old filly High Rank, by Day Comet from Sailor’s Hope, has finished her racing career and has teen sent back to Stonyhurst. She is a half-sister to the well performed mare, Fast Passage, and though lacking the brilliancy of her relative shaped at one stage like developing into a useful stayer. Unfortunately she became affected in the wind and her retirement to the stud has been decided on.
