THE WEATHER
Dominion Meteorologist. General situation —An intense depression has crossed the Dominion, and is now centred east of the South Island. An anti-cyclone covers the whole of Australia and the Western Tasman Sea. Winds—Strong south-westerly to southerly of gale force at places, especially along the east coast. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Heavy south of Castlepoint and on the west coast of the North Island, elsewhere rough. Eastern Tasman Sea—Strong southerly winds to gales and rough to heavy seas, but conditions gradually moderating. Weather—Unsettled and squally, further rain in most parts, and snow on the ranges, but improving soon on the west coast of the South Island and the improvement gradually extending over the remainder of the Dominion; very cold temperatures likely. Conditions in Timaru. Cold, showery weather prevailed in Timaru yesterday. Steady rain set in at 8 a.m. and continued until about 10.30 when the sky cleared temporarily. Fairly heavy showers fell intermittently throughout the afternoon and evening, the prevailing wind being southwest. The temperature last night was particularly cold.
