CRIMINALS FIGHT FOR LIBERTY

ARMY OF POLICE AGAINST JOHN DILLINGER. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received April 25, 5.5 p.m.) MONTREAL, April 23. A message from St. Paul states that John Dillinger, America’s most daring criminal in a generation, is being hotly pursued through the north woods ol Minnesota and Wisconsin by an army of police and Federal agents, after defeating those attempting to capture him in four pitched battles in the past twelve hours. Since he escaped from Crown Point gaol on March 2, Dillinger has led the officers a wild chase through the middle and northern States. To-day, with six fellow gangsters and five women, he occupied and strongly fortified an amusement resort in northern Wisconsin, and mounted a machine gun on the roof. Peace officers surrounded the place but Dillinger managed to shoot his way out with machine guns. One officer and one bystander were killed. In a quick retreat southward in automobiles he exchanged fire with the officers several times and four officers were seriously injured. It is believed that there were casualties among the gangsters. To-night hundreds of officers were deployed over a vast area in an effort to cover every possible means of escape.
