COMPETITION ENDED STAR FAIL BADLY The final games of the South Canterbury Association’s senior competition were played on Saturday, although the matches could not affect the result, Star being in an unassailable position. Playing at the Park, Old Boys passed Celtic’s total of 112 with three w’ickets in hand and at the Rectory School had an easy win over Star. Star failed badly, making only 43, and School rattled on 88 for the loss of only three wickets. SCHOOL v. STAR. Shillito and Button were the only two to make a stand in Star’s innings, their scores being 16 and 13 respectively. None of the others reached double figures. Blue had things all his own way with the ball, taking six wickets for nine runs, Souter went for a “duck” to Williams and McLaughlan was caught by Milliken off Taylor when he had made 10, but when Ritchie and Blue became associated runs came freely and School had little difficulty in putting on 88 for the loss of three wickets. OLD BOYS v. CELTIC.
The match between Old Boys and Celtic was played on the Park ground in unpleasant conditions, a heavy drizzle falling during the greater part of the afternoon. Old Boys won the toss, and put Celtic in, Kane and Harding opening the innings with a useful partnership. Kane’s knock was marred by two chances, but Harding gave a very solid display. None of the other members of the depleted Celtic team did much with the bat, except a junior, McGrath, who showed promise. The innings closed for 110. Spinning the ball well and keeping a good length, Marriott returned a fine analysis. Lee and Unwin opened the Old Boys’ innings, with a breezy partnership, each hitting a six off Burton. However, several wickets fell rapidly, and it remained for Lawson and Marriott to carry the score past the Celtic total by good batting. Kane was easily the best of the Celtic bowlers, who were considerably handicapped by the greasy ball. Scores:— CELTIC. First Innings.
