JAY WALKERS
SYDNEY POLICE CAMPAIGN. The police authorities in Sydney decided to begin a special campaign against "jay walkers.” Commenting on the decision, the “Sydney Morning Herald” said: “While it is generally realised that from a variety of causes the traffic problems of Sydney are peculiarly difficult, it was clearly revealed during the Christmas ‘rush’ season in the city that much danger and inconvenience were caused not only by careless pedestrians who apparently thought that vehicle drivers should shoulder all the responsibility for road safety, but also by persons who, although keeping an alert eye on vehicles, often crossed intersections against the traffic flow, and took either a meandering or long diagonal course. The feeling among motorists is that, although it is reasonable to demand that they should exhibit extreme care when driving in crowded city streets, it is not equitable that pedestrian traffic should remain undisciplined.
