December 27. “The Financial News" says: A new development of Japanese competition is the inauguration of direct monthly shipments of Japanese goods to West Africa. Hitherto the goods have come by steamer to Europe, and have been transhipped at Marseilles. London, Liverpool or Antwerp. The first direct shipment is now en route, including cotton and silk goods, bicycles, metalware, beer and other goods.
