FEARS OF INTENSE TARIFF WAR

ALARM IN LEAGUE CIRCLES IRONICAL POSITION OF UNITED STATES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 11, 9.30 p.m ) PARIS, December 11. The Geneva correspondent of the British United Press says that the economic experts of the League of Nations fear that a series of dangerous tarifT wars are likely as early as 1934, as the result of the wholesale denunciations of the tariff truce. Uncertain monetary conditions have forced most countries to free themselves from the truce, in order to raise barriers against countries using depreciated currencies. But the League of Nations’ experts fear the worst period has not yet arrived, but Will come when the effects of the depreciated American dollar is felt abroad. This will not be fully felt until President Roosevelt announces the figure at which the dollar will be stabilised, as United States exporters will then be in a position to concentrate upon world markets. League of Nations circles regard it as ironical that the United States, which proposed the tariff truce, should be chiefly responsible for its death.
