QUARTERLY MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association INVERCARGILL. December 8. The quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union was held here today. It was decided to urge the Unemployment Board and the Public Works Department immediately to investigate with a view to proceeding with ihe completion of the Haast Pass road as a major unemployment un ieitaklng. Referring to the annual drivers' license, Mr D. J. Wesuey <Southland) said that certain countries issued a license, attached to which were renewal Insets, covering six years. The Southland Association thought su'ih a license would effect a cons’derable saving in work and cost, and it a '* r ' T "- mended that the executive should discuss the matter further with the authorities. The Recommendation was adopted. A resolution was passed requesting that the Government be asked to give an assurance that if any commission is set up dealing with the question of derating, then motorists should be given representation on such commission. It was maintained That ihe motorists as a section were carrying more than their burden of the iural roading problem, and that motor taxation should not be diverted from road construction and mainteitance and other purposes. The conference approved on broad principles the Canterbury Association's free road sendee scheme, and it was resolved that the financial associations be asked fully to consider it in theh meantime, and to report at (he i-ext meeting. __
