ROWING

TIMARU CLUB. The second semi-final of the Timaru Rowing Club’s President's Fours was rowed on Friday evening. The sea was too rough for racing outside so two trials were rowed within the harbour, both of which resulted in dead heats. The contestants were:—H. Tapp (s). H. Currie, T. Jack, and R. McDonald, versus L. Bennington (s), W. Mitchell, L. Richardson and W. Willmott. In the rough w’ater at the mouth of the harbour, Bennington got away with the better start and led to the Samson crane, where Tapp, rowing the steadier stroke, gradually drew’ up to finish a dead heat. In the second trial Tapp got the b'.t of the start and in the middle of the race had three-quarters of a length on his opponents. But Bennington, rising on the crest of a wave, hung to it by quickening his stroke, and quickly diaw’ing up finished on even terms w’ith the opposition. The race was re-rowed on Saturday evening. There was a very light wind from the south, slight undulations of the sea from the east helping the rowers on their way. From a good start Tapp gradually took the lead, and entered the harbour half a length to the good. Coming down to the wharves. Bennington (rowing a very quick stroke) got within a canvas of the leaders, but here Tapp sprinted, and drew away to wnn by three-quarters of a length. The final, between A. Dodd s and H. Tapp's crews, will be rowed this evening. ______
