SOUTH SCHOOL

FLOWER SHOW AND GALA excellent exhibits The enthusiasm of residents of the south end over any function connected with the South School was fully evident on Saturday when m ideal weather parents, friends, staff and children combined in making the annual flower show’ and gala an unqualified success. It was an afternoon and night full of activity for all, and large crowds demonstrated the greatest interest in the exhibits of flowers, vegetables, fruit, school worn, cookery and decorated vehicles, the classes for most of w’hich were numerous, and the standard exceedingly high. The fact that competition in the floral fruit and vegetable section was restricted to exhibits grown m the South School district by exhibitors or members of the household, did not affect the numerical strength of entries, which compared more than favourably with last year. The domestic and other work was done mostly during school hours. A display of school work was a great centre of attraction, parents being afforded an opportunity of witnessing the value of the tuition given their children m handwork, needlework and other forms of school activity. The Timaru Municipal Band under Lieut. W. H. Osborne was in attendance and its selections were much enjoyed.

Official Opening. The show was officially opened by the Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite), who was Introduced by the secretary of the Flower Show Committee (Mr W. Gibb). , .. The 1 -yor assured the large gathering that Mrs Satterthwaite and himself were always proud to be associated with any function connected with the South School. He complimented the School Committee on their work in the interests of the children, and the organisers of the flower show and gala for the completeness of the arrangements, and on their keenness to raise funds for the school. The show which had brought forth high standard work on the part of the pupils, was a credit to all concerned.

Baby Show. One of the chief attractions of the afternoon session was the baby show which was judged by Sister Adams and Mrs T. E. Holdgate. There were large entries, the results being: Girls (under six months). —Maureen Barry 1, June McNichol 2; hoys, Michael Doyle 1, Peter Sullivan 2.
