SEADOWN

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The final meeting of the school committee for the year took place in the school on Tuesday. Present —Messrs Edgar (chairman), Brosnahan (secretary), Cargo. Fitzgerald and F. Smith.

Mr Williams, the headmaster, reported as follows: The roll stood at 60, and the average attendance for the last four weeks was 54.5. A certain amount of sickness and wet weather had interfered with the attendance. The inspector, Mr Hawke, visited the school on November 8, and his report was to hand. A visit was also paid by Mr Ridley, agricultural instructor. The lawn in the front of the school was making headway, and the potato experimental plots had been planted. The long grass on the playing field was cut by Mr Edgar, and supplies of seed potatoes were given by Mr Kennedy. Six proficiency pupils sat on November 17th at Temuka, but the results' were not to hand. The Herbert Smith Trust Cups for tennis were being competed for. and there was the matter of engraving the names of the winning girl and boy. Two matches with the Washdyke school at rounders and cricket had been held, resulting in wins for the latter school. On behalf of the staff, he thanked the committee for its able support during the year, and extended seasonal greetings.

The report was received, and the greetings reciprocated. It was decided to hold the school picnic in the playground on December 20th. break-up day. No school concert will be held this year, but prizes will be presented to all the infant room and the merit pupils of the senior room. Special prizes will be given for sewing, the fallowing being the donors P 4 to Form 2, Mesdames O'Connor (2), Brosnahan, Fitzgerald. Cargo, Smith and Williams. It was decided to ask Mrs W. Smith to Judge the sewing.

WABHPYKE. GENERAL. Messrs Brown and Ridley. Agricultural Instructors to the Education Board, visited the local school in connection with the judging of the gardens for the Hurdley Shield. The gardens at the Racecourse are at their best Just now. and there is a wonderful blaze of colour. The Soldiers’ Memorial plots have been planted out. and the railway crossing improved for motoring traffic.
