BRIDE IN DANGER
ANONYMOUS THREATS OF KIDNAPPING.
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 7, 11.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, December 7. Anonymous letters to the Lord Mayor, urging him to take precautions to prevent the kidnapping of his bride, caused a sensation. Another letter to the bride's mother expresses thanks for the guarding of her against trouble before yesterday's wedding.
Extraordinary scenes occurred cutside St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral, Melbourne, when crowds struggled with the police in an effort to gain admittance for the wedding of Miss Cynthia Brookes, daughter of Mr Norman Brookes, the lawn tennis player, with the Lord Mayor of Melbourne (Councillor H. Gengoult Smith). Owing to rumours of possible untoward happenings, two detectives kept watch throughout the night in the Brookes home. The wedding of the Lord Mayor of Melbourne to the daughter of Mr and Mrs Norman Brookes was looked upon as the social ..vent of the year in Melbourne. and at the request of the City Council the reception was held in thTown Hall. Before the City Council made this offer 900 invitations had been issued by Mr and Mrs Brookes for a private reception in their own home, but this number was then increased. Banners bearing the city Coat of Arms were to be prominently displayed as part of the decorative scheme. Mr and Mrs Brookes donated £SO to the Lord Mayor's fund to show their appreciation of the council’s offer. The Town Hall was decorated for the ceremony by the parks and gardens staff of the City Council, under the direction of the Curator of Parks and Gardens (Mr Smith). The setting was floral, and thousands of rare blooms were brought from the nurseries In the Fitzroy Gardens to convert the Town Hall into a flower garden.
