WOMEN’S DIVISION

TIMARU BRANCH. At a largely attended meeting of the Timaru branch of the Women's Division New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mrs B. E. Evans presided. The president stated that in December four years ago, the branch had started with 14 members and it had never looked back. New members were being enrolled every month, and it was very pleasing to note the good attendances at meetings. Only with that united effort could they hope to attain their “primary object,” that of helping the women and children on the land. Instead of holding a special meeting for the anniversary, a picnic Is to be held early In January near the Dam in conjunction with the Farmers’ Union. It was proposed to ask the Maungatl and Cannington- branches to co-operate. The following members of the Farmers' Union formed a sports committee: Messrs P. R. Talbot, A. Ward, B. Evans, R. B. Hart, and A. Thoreau, secretary.

Correspondence was read from Mr F. L, N, Tuck, inviting members to make their annual visit to the Technical College. The invitation was received with pleasure. Flock House wrote thanking the W.D.F.U. for its support. A discussion took place regarding the dairy regulations regarding getting a clearance from one factory before supplying another. As there was a wide diversity of opinion on the subject, it was proposed by Miss Cargill, and carried, that members try to get more information regarding the subject before passing a remit. Members were invited to attend an address by Mrs T. E. Taylor, Christchurch, on “The Mentally Deficient,” at the Y.W.C.A. club-room. Mrs J. Brown gave a demonstration of making novelties. Mrs Brown showed how the artistic hand could make beautiful things at the lowest cost.

Competitions resulted: Best sponge cake, Mrs P. Brosnahan 1, Mrs C. Johnson 2, Mrs Stocker 3. Best Christmas present to cost 1/-: Mrs Stocker 1, Mrs C. Johnson and Mrs Smith equal 2, Mrs McConnel 3, The judges, Mrs R. B. Hart and Mrs Brown, were accorded a vote of thanks.
