FORMER SOLICITOR CHARGED

BAIL REFUSED Bv Telegraph — Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, December 5. Five charges were preferred against John Black Batchelor (32), solicitor’s clerk, in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, alleging perjury in the Supreme Court on August 24, while giving evidence in a case concerning a petition for the dissolution of a marriage; also with wilfully attempting to pervert the course of justice, and with fabricating evidence with intent to mislead the Supreme Court. He was remanded till December 14. Bail was refused, the Crown Prosecutor stating that there would probably be a sixth charge. A fifth charge had been laid as a result of an allegation that Batchelor had interfered with witnesses when on bail.
