MELBOURNE CUP

HALL MARK’S NARROW VICTORY TRIVALVE’S FEAT EQUALLED United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, November 7. The weather was delightful for the second day of the Victorian Racing Club's Spring meeting at Flemington. There was an enormous attendance, including many New Zealanders. Regal Son scratched for the Cup at 11.48 a.m. Hall Mark, who was considered a doubtful starter till the eleventh hour, had a brilliant victory in the Cup. Never further back than seventh, he headed Gaine Carrington 100 yards from the post. Shadow King made a great effort and now has two seconds and two thirds to his credit in five starts. Topical made a dead heat with Gaine Carrington in the last stride. Rogilla was never dangerous and beat only four home. Kali Mark's winnings are approximately £17,000. He equalled Trivalve’s feat of winning two Derbies and the Cup in one season. His owner is Mr C. B. Kellow. The trainer, J. Holt, had his first win in the Cup. The apprentice, J. O’Sulivan has been riding for 18 months and it was his first Cup ride. The winner received a mixed reception. J. O'Sullivan, rider of Hall Mark, stated that the colt weakened in the last 20 yards and just won, Breasley said Shadow King met a check two furlongs from home but finished gamely. McCarten said Topical should have won but was checked a furlong from home, and again near the post. Pike said Gaine Carrington weakened in the last few yards. O’Sullivan says he has never lost a race carrying No. 13 saddle cloth, which was Hall Mark’s number.

Phocis, who was prominent always, won the Cup Hurdles comfortably from the former New Zealanders My Talisman and Bayacre, who spoilt their chances by erratic jumping. Phocis was second in this race last year. Any Day finished strongly to win the Railway High Weight Handicap for ownertrainer W. Burk, who has had a lucky run recently with Whitsome and Wayback.

The New Zealand bred Quarto had a narrow win in the Mimosa Stakes. The favourite, Hustle On was left at the post and took no part in the race. Mr W. R. Kemball’s Berith failed to show up. Wirrata, owned and trained by the former New Zealander, Vin O’Neill, had a runaway win in the Steeplechase. He was ridden by the apprentice H. Bruton-, whose first mount it was at Flemington.

Favoured by a great run on the rails in the straight. Brave Boy captured the first division of the Yan Yean Stakes. Closing Time led early but tired. The winner is trained by the former New Zealander, Maurice McGrath. Ruling Light (New Zealand) won his first race in Australia with a brilliant finishing run in the second division of the Yan Yean- Stakes.
