The Trotting Cup

Red Shadow Wins Easily Huon Voyage Prevails in Trotters' Race Special to “ The Herald ” CHRISTCHURCH, November 7. The heavy rain which marred Derby Day at Riccarton ceased during Monday night, and after a period of uncertainty the sun shone out brightly this morning. As a result, conditions at Addington for the Trotting Cup were very much better than had appeared possible overnight, and the track, which was sticky at the outset, improved rapicly as the day progressed. The Trotting Cup was not an exciting one so far as the finish was concerned, Red Shadow outstaying Mrs Harrall’s other candidate Royal Silk, with the rest of the field strung out. This was J. Bryce’s sixth Cup win, the others having been Cathedral Chimes, Great Hope, Ahuriri (twice) and Kohara. The Victorian trotter Huon Voyage scored a nice win for his absentee owner, F. B. McFarlane, in the Dominion Handicap, after Todd Lonzia broke when looking a winner.

Red Shadow supplemented his Cup win with a brilliant victory in the Hagley Handicap, completing a double never before accomplished. The meeting concluded in glorious sunshine, but the last race was not run till an hour behind schedule time. The totalisator investments were £43,783/10/- (win £17,793/107-, place £25,990), as against £41,891/10/- last year.

NOTES ON THE RACING Favourite Makes Recovery. Real Belle 808-1320 was backed as if defeat was out of the question in the Spring Handicap, there being a drop in the figures to Cannonball 361-485. New Metford broke at the start, and Real Belle, who began smartly in the lead, made a bad break leaving the straight. This left Great Nelson in charge from Mr Penalty and Nelson Ata, but Nelson Ata left his feet when the back was reached. Worthy Queen trotted fast along the back, and Biddy Parrish and Lough Guy came fast along the straight, and at the commencement of the last round the leaders were Great Nelson, Lough Guy, Merce Bingen, Real Belle, Biddy Parrish, Worthy Queen and Standby. After turning into the back Biddy Parrish and Lough Guy broke, and Real Belle joined Great Nelson in the lead from Standby and Worthy Queen. Real Belle and Lough Guy led into the home stretch from Standby, Worthy Queen and Cannonball. Lough Guy had his head in front a furlong from home, but Real Belle came again and beat him by half a length. Cannonball was a length behind- the Washdyke trotter, with Standby a length further back, just ahead of Worthy Queen. Easy for Indianapolis. Another hot favourite was found for the Empire Handicap in Indianapolis 1253-1083, nearly all the remaining money being entrusted to Taxpayer 923-914 and Blue Mountain 699-903. Unfortunately Taxpayer was fractious at the start, and along with Blue Mountain, Major Lind, Chef and George Rey, wrecked his chance by breaking when the barriers flew back. Editor, after momentarily dwelling, soon took up the running from Some Guy, Somerby, Avernus and Eureka Boy. Passing the stand after covering half a mile, Eureka Boy and Some Guy were together, followed by Sodium, Editor, Somerby, Avernus and Indianapolis. Going down the back Indianapolis put in a brilliant run which placed him alongside Eureka Boy in the lead, from Some Guy, Avernus and Somerby. Indianapolis and Eureka Boy turned for home together clear of Some Guy and Avernus, but a furlong from home Indianapolis unwound another burst of speed, and shot away to win easily by four lengths from Some Guy, who defeated Avernus by a head. Blue Mountain was three lengths away, a couple of lengths ahead of Taxpayer, and this pair made up so much ground after a hopeless beginning that it was unfortunate they were not in a position to challenge the winner. Bryce’s Sixth Cup. The course was in quite good order when the Trotting Cup came up for decision, and all expectations of a mudlarks’ race were shattered. W. J. Tomkinson did not drive either of his pair, M. Edwards piloting Free Advice and J. Fraser jr. Mountain Dell. From the opening of the betting the public showed a pronounced preference for the Red Shadow-Royal Silk combination 2627-2053, Satin King 1560-1462, and Harold Logan 1404-1492. Glenrossie broke at the start, but got going after losing a little over a second, while Satin King, who began well, cracked up badly after going fifty yards. Sir Guy, Mountain' Dell, Kingcraft, Royal Silk and Free Advice began well in that order, and passing the stand the first time the order was Mountain Dell, Sir Guy, Royal Silk, Kingcraft, Free Advice, Red Shadow, Wrackler. At the end of a lap Harold Logan had paced up to the tail of the bunch. Sir Guy, Royal Silk, Kingcraft, Free Advice and Red Shadow led the pack down the back, and past the mile post (2.14 4-5), and with a round to go the call was Royal Silk, Red Shadow, Mountain Dell, Kingcraft, Free Advice, Glenrossie, Sir Guy, with Roi l’Or and Harold Logan handy. Royal Silk piloted Red Shadow, Mountain Dell, Free Advice, Kingcraft and Glenrossie along the back, but Kingcraft dropped out three furlongs from home, where Harold Logan began a fast run. Royal Silk and Red Shadow ran round the home turn followed by Free Advice and Glenrossie, with Harold Logan making an effort on the outside of the second division. A furlong from home Red Shadow slipped up on the softer going inside Royal Silk, and defeated his bracket-mate by a length and a half. Mountain Dell, Lindbergh, Harold Logan and Glenrossie followed at gaps of three lengths, most of the others having been pulled up. Silver de Oro Unlucky. The Aucklander Kewpie’s Guy was a pronounced favourite for the Yaldhurst Handicap, with good place backing for Arethusa and Gold Tinge. Regal Voyage, Silver de Oro and Royal Again all broke at the start, but the Australian lost no ground by his mistake. Logan’s Pride set out to lead all the way from Arethusa and Gold Tinge, and passing the stand the first time she was followed by Arethusa, Kewpie’s Guy, Vesuvius, Gold Tinge, and Silver de Oro. Colorado was tailed off, and was pulled up a bit later. There was no change at the mile (2.19), and with a lap to go the order was Logan’s Pride, Arethusa, Kewpie’s Guy, Silver de Oro, Vesuvius, Gold Tinge, First i

Flight. Kewpie’s Guy was disappointed in an effort to get through on the rails at the far turn, where Royal Again dashed to the front, but she got an opening two furlongs from home and quickly took charge from Arethusa, Silver de Oro, Gold Tinge, and Royal Again. A good finish ended in Gold Tinge, driven in “Plaxieo” fashion-, getting up to beat Kewpie’s Guy by half a length, with Silver de Oro half a length further back. Royal Again, four lengths away, was the only other in sight. Silver de Oro was unlucky, as her break at the start cost her the race. The Trotters. The Washdyke trotter Louis Bingen--1923-1368 was favourite each way for the Dominion Handicap, but there was strong place backing for Huon Voyage 1299, Todd Lonzia 1169, Mountain Mist 785, and Writer 718. Biddy Parrish and Writer broke at the start, and Mountain Mist, who began best, compounded at the end of three furlongs. Louis Bingen was in charge -when the stand was passed the first time, from Kempton, Todd Lonzia and Huon Voyage. Kempton broke down and was pulled up, and at the mile (2.21 2-5) the pacemakers were Louis Bingen, Biddy Parrish, Huon Voyage, Todd Lonzia, with a big gap to Stanley Bingen and Writer. Louis Bingen Huon Voyage, Biddy Parrish and Todd Lonzia had the race to themselves with a lap to go. At the far turn Huon Voyage, Todd Lonzia and Biddy Parrish all headed the favourite, and at the home turn Huon Voyage and Todd Lonzia looked like fighting it out. Just as Todd Lonzia got his head in front a hundred yards from the post he left his feet, leaving Huon Voyage to win by two lengths from Biddy Parrish, who beat Todd Lonzia (still on a break) by three lengths. Louis Bingen was the only other in sight. An Easy Win. Girvan was place favourite for the Riccarton Handicap, but T. Wallis provided the win favourite with the Southlander Prairie King. Guy Denver broke at the start, and Apex was slow’ to move. Chenwood set a hot pace from the start, and at the stand was eight lengths ahead of Holly Bank. Cloudy Range, Prairie King. Royal Drusus. and Girvan. Chenwood reached the mile station in 2.13 2-5 (faster than the Cup mile) three lengths ahead of Holly Bank and Girvan, who were being pressed by Prairie King and Royal Drusus. Chenwood, Girvan. Royal Drusus, Prairie King, Holly Bank and Pronto Bingen were a long way ahead of the others at the beginning of the final stage, and at the far turn (three furlonugs from home) Chenwood and Girvan were just in front of Prairie King, Royal Drusus and Pronto Bingen. Once in the straight Royal Drusus cut down the leaders and won easily by five lengths from Prairie King, who was passed a furlong from home by Pronto Bingen, but came again and collected second money by two lengths. Erin’s Princess, who broke and lost a lot of ground in the early stages, was fourth. Reporter was pulled up after going a mile. A Fast Run Race. Weather and track were ideal by the time the Victoria Handicap (run 55 minutes behind schedule) was reached. A hot favourite was found in Gay Gordon, but Purser and Wrecker were in good demand for places. Ciro, Gay Gordon. Jolly Wave, Wrecker and Kelp made the early running, but John Jinks dashed to the front before a round had been completed and led to the mile (2.13 2-5) from Gay Gordon Raydus, Manoeuvre, Jolly Wave, Kelp and Ciro. Gay Gordon and Raydus assumed command as they began the last section, being closely attended by John Jinks, Jolly Wave, Manoeuvre, Grand Canyon, Kelp and Ciro. Down the back Raydus and Gay Gordon were just clear of a bunch headed by Jollv Wave and Manoeuvre, and at the far turn Raydus and Gay Gordon were carrying on from Ciro, who got a run on the rail. Gay Gordon showed the way round the top from Ciro and Purser (who broke at the start and made up ground in brilliant style). A great race home ended in Gay Gordon holding off Ciro to win by a length from Ciro, who beat Purser by a length and a half. Master Rey, Jolly Wave and Gunfire were next. Red Shadow’s Double. Red Shadow, who escaped a penalty for his Cup win, was favourite each way for the Hagley Handicap with 1735-1372, but Mountain Dell and Free Advice 1190-1390 and Sunny Morn 1046-1068 helped to make up a good pool. Sunny Morn and Great Logan broke at the start and Free Advice dwelt slightly. Mountain Dell. Logan’s Pride and Brent Zolock were at the head of affairs at the end of two furlongs. and passing the stand, Brent Zoiock had drawn out from Mountain Dell, Logan’s Pride, First Flight, Red Shadow and Sunny Morn. Brent Zolock led Mountain Dell, Red Shadow, Logan’s Pride and Sunny Morn along the back, and at the top the order was Brent Zolock , Mountain Dell, Red Shadow and Sunny Morn. After reaching the straight it looked as if Mountain Dell was holding Red Shadow, but the favourite responded with a flash of speed which left him to win easing up by a length and a half from Mountain Dell, who beat Brent Zolock by two lengths. Sunny Morn was fourth, a good performance after a ibad beginning. Red Shadow registered 2.39 4-5, without being extended. HANDICAPS FOR SECOND DAY.
