EXTREME PENALTY
SEQUEL TO MURDER IN NORTHERN TERRITORY. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received November 7, 9.35 p.m.) DARWIN, November 7. Ernest Moray, baker, was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of Palmer Brushe, an engineer, of Alexandra station, Northern Territory. The jury added a strong recommendation to mercy on various grounds. Baker, who is part owner of the Binmarch station in the Darkly Tableland, is the first white man sentenced to death for murdering a white man in Northern Territory. Baker desired to marry a half-caste girl, who, however, was in love with another man, named Cottis, but the latter was not prepared to marry her. Baker went to Cottis’ hut, fired several shots through the door. Cottis had previously escaped, but Brushe, who was inside, was inadvertently shot dead, whereupon Baker surrendered to the i>oliec.
