OCTOBER WEATHER SUMMARY.
Rain on nine days during October accounted for the moderate fall of 186 points compared with 471 points in October, 1932. The rainfall till October 31 this year totals 18.87 inches, which is considerably below the average. During the same period last year the rainfall was 27.78 inches, but 1931 was exceptionally dry, only 17.15 inches being recorded for the period under review.
The recent downpour accounted for 4.45 inches for the 72 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday, making a total of 22.92 inches. The previous shortage of moisture caused considerable anxiety throughout the district, but the heavy rain during the last three days will have a beneficial effect on the crops. The figures registered on Mr B. R. Macdonald’s gauge at “Waitui” show that rain fell on nine days, the readings taken at 9 a.m. for the previous 24 hours being as follow: October Ist, 6 points: 6th, 17; 7th. 10; 14th, 41; 15th, 3; 20th. 52; 21st 7; 22nd, 24; and 28th, 26; a total of 1.86 inches. Jefferson Farjeon’s “No. 17” will be screened at the Municipal Theatre this evening. Never has so much talent been concentrated in one film, the result of which is an hour and a half's super entertainment packed with thrills and laughter. Leon M. Lion, who plays the role of “Ben,” is supported by Anne Grey, Donald Calthrop, John Stuart, Garry Marsh and Ann Casson. There will be excellent supports. Mr E. Cholerton, proprietor of John R. Procter’s, the Premier Opticians. Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine on Wednesday, the 25th October, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel.
