CROWN TENANTS
MORE THAN A MILLION OWING FOR RENT. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, November 7. The most illuminating feature of the report of the Department of Lands and Survey for the year ended March 31, which was presented to the House of Representatives by the Hon. J. G. Cobbe to-day, in the statement contained therein that the Crown tenants of New Zealand owe the State in arrears of rent at that date the sum of £1.010,979. The receipts from all sources for the year amounted to £742.820, which are contrasted with the receipts for the year ended March, 1929, amounting to £1,290,836. The rebate for prompt payment for the year amounted to £26,285, while the total amount advanced to Crown tenants for the development of their holdings was £112.369. The total expenditure on development by the Department for the year amounted to £200.963. The selection of Crown and settlement lands on all tenures during the year totalled 280,518 acres. At March 31 the tenants on the books of the Department numbered 37.714 occupying a total area of slightly over 19.000.000 acres, for which pastoral runs account for nearly 9,000,000 acres.
