BOWLING SEASON OPENS PAIRS TOURNAMENT The Temuka Bovfiing Club yesterday commenced Its activities for the season with a progressive pairs tournament. The green was in good order for the time of year, and competition was keen. Visitors were present from Geraldine, and the winners were: — Messrs W. McCallum and Loach (skips) and W. L. Morrison and another (leads). Mr Loach was one of the" Geraldine visitors. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies. AUXILIARY GOES CAMPING. As their form of activity for last week and this, seven members of the High School Old Girls Basketball Auxiliary organised and took part In a camp at the Rangitata mouth. Leaving Temuka on Saturday afternoon and evening, the girls travelled out by car and spent the week-end in a hut kindly lent by a supporter of the club. Although weather conditions were disagreeable a most enjoyable time was spent In .going for walks over the nearby country and in carrying out the camp routine. An advance returned to Temuka yesterday afternoon and the remainder last evening. CHURCH MISSION OPENS. At the Methodist Church last evening the United Churches of Temuka commenced a week's mission, conducted by the Rev. A. M. Costain, of Waimate. Preceded by a song service, which proved most popular, the service was conducted on lines applicable to the united cause for which the mission is being held, and there was a most encouraging attendance. On each evening this week the mission will be continued. 1 NO VISITORS TO MOTOR CAMP. Although everything is in readiness for the coming of visitors to the motor camp in the Temuka Domain, so far there has been no one to make use of the facilities since the passing of the winter. It is rather unusual for there to be no visitors for Labour Day week-end, but perhaps the cold and uncertain weather dissuaded many from trying this method of spending the weekend. Last spring the first visiting motor camper came in about September and there were one or two for Labour Day. METHODIST PICNIC. Members of the Methodist Bible Classes, and their friends, yesterday visited the Waihl Gorge, for their annual picnic. The Journey was made by private cars and a bus and the picnickers left at 9.30, returning at about tea time General conditions were good at pie Gorge, and the day was spent to taking walks up into the bush and climbing the nearby hills. GENERAL NEWS. During the week-end Mrs J. Ross, of Orakipaoa, had the misfortune to fall from a stepladder and Injure her forehead. A cut requiring several stitches was attended to by Dr A. S. McXnnes. Preparations for the summer camping season are being made by many of the hut holders at Waipopo Reserve on the lower reaches of the Opihi. Advantage of the holiday was taken b. some In effecting repairs and painting, but generally the number of visitors from Timaru was not so large as it would have been under better conditions. PERSONAL. Mrs W. Leggett and Miss Margaret Leggett, of Christchurch, who have been staying in Temuka, returned north during the week-end. Mrs Mountfort senr., is the guest of the Rev. and Mrs C. L. Mountfort, Temuka. Miss P. Taylor has returned from a holiday In Nelson. Mr and Mrs T. Wallace tOhrtstchurch) were the guests of Mr and , rs D. Taylor, Hayhurst Street, for Labour Day week-end. Mrs M. Doody, St. Albans, Chr*stchurch, and Mrs J. Percasky, Papanul. Christchurch, returned north yesterday after having visited Temuka for the St. Joseph's Jubilee celebrations. Mr E. Cholerton, proprietor of John R. Procter’s, the Premier Opticians. Christchurch, will be visiting Temuka on Saturday, the 18th November, and mav be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel. .Appointments can now be made by ringing UPE Dispensary, No 340 M. ....
