Shatter’s form at Washdyke appears to have partly restored him to favour for the New Zealand Cup, on the supposition that it marked considerable improvement on his previous spring running. This theory, examined through Chrysology, may prove unsound. The pair have clashed four times this spring, and each time the Washdyke gelding has finished in front though all through backers have preferred Shatter. Starting off at Ashburton, Chrysology finished seven lengths ahead of Shatter. At Kurow. Shatter came in on 71b better terms, but Chrysology beat him by four lengths. At Dunedin, Chrysology came in 21b better, but again Shatter carried more money, only to be defeated by three lengths. On Saturday at Washdyke, Shatter once more top- | ped the other in the betting, and got ’ to within a neck of him at the finish. ! but it was due to the margin In the weights being reduced by 91b. At Ashburton. Shatter was attempting to concede Chrysology 241 b. at Dunedin 191 b. and at Washdyke 101 b. These figures are sufficient to account for Shatter's apparent return to form, unless it Ls conceded that Chrysology is improving also.
