RENTAL OF HOUSE
APPLICATION TO HOSPITAL BOARD. In the report of the Social Service Committee, which was presented to the monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday, the statement was made that the committee recommended that assistance in one case be increased from 25/- to £2 a week. The matter w r as first briefly discussed in committee, and on resuming in open meeting, the secretary (Mr H. G. Naylor) reviewed the case. He said that the man was an employee of the Timaru Borough Council, and he w r as being asked to pay 22/6 a week rent. The man had become ill, had gone into hospital, and application had been made to the Board for assistance, and 25/- a week had been granted. On August 16, the Borough Council had made application to the Board for the payment of rent. Mr Naylor said that he knew the case personally, and the people w r ere triers, but they were right up against it. Dr. C. A. Paterson said that he had known the case for many years. In his opinion the house was not worth more than 12/6 a week. A rental of 25/- a week was ridiculous.
Mr G. Dash: And he was an employee of the Council? Mr Naylor: Yes. Mr H. J. Clark said that the committee had had similar applications for the payment of rent from individuals, but not from a local body. Dr. Paterson: The man has been with the Council for a very long time, and when he is working, he is a good worker.
Mr Clark said that after hearing the facts, he was satisfied that the committee had done all that it could be expected to; in fact it had done more. The committee's recommendation was adopted.
