GOLF
WOMEN’S TOURNEY SEMI-FINALISTS FOUND The weather was fine, but there was a nasty wind for the fourth round of the women's golf tourney. The local champion, Miss Currie, won her game against Mrs Guy Williams by confident play, Mrs Williams finding the wind very troublesome. Miss Gaisford and Mrs Collinson had a close game which was won by the former at the seventeenth after being 2 up at the turn. Another close game was fought out between Mrs Stout and Mrs Blair, the former winning 2 and 1, faulty putting over the last two holes spoiling the chances of the loser. The match between Miss Kay and Miss Barnes-Graham was very exciting, and the Australian champion was taken to the nineteenth before she gained a win, being 3 up at the turn. A feature of the game was the powerful driving and fine putting of the winner. Miss Kay’s Record. Following on after the fourth round, of play in the championships came the Donnelly Cup contestants playing over 18 holes stroke play, this match also counting as the third of the series for the Mellsop Cup aggregate. Miss E. Fleetwood (Christchurch) proved the winner returning a net score of 76, her card of 93 being reduced by a handicap of 17. Returning a card of 85 for the Donnelly Cup, Miss O. Kay thus had an aggregate of 242 for the Mellsop Cup, her Coronation Medal round being done in 78 and her L.GU. Challenge match figures being 79. This makes the eighth win in succession for Miss Kay in the Mellsop Cup match, a record without parallel in the two decades over which the trophy has been contested. Mrs G. Williams, it may be noted, won the Mellsop Cup on no fewer than seven occasions at intervals, but Miss Kay’s victories have been registered in successive years. As was befitting a player who had broken course records in the Coronation Medal round, Mrs Cook (Castlecliffe), filled the role of runner-up, but her card was an expensive one of 90, making her aggregate 250, eight strokes behind Miss Kay’s. Two strokes further back came Miss Gaisford with another semi-finalist in Mrs Stout, tieing with Miss Barnes-Graham with 255. Teams’ Match. The club teams’ match, played today in conjunction with the Donnelly Cup, was won by the Manawatu A team with a total of 360, Wellington A being second with 364, and Hawke’s Bay third with 368. The leading teams were:— Manawatu A (Miss Gaisford 85, Mrs Cooke 90, Miss Helean 92, Miss Currie 93); total 360. Wellington A (Mrs D. Wilson 98, Mrs Stout 82, Mrs G. Williams 95, Miss Hanson 89), 364. Mellsop Cup. The Mellsop Cup, for competitors returning the best aggregate scratch score of three rounds of stroke play in the Coronation Medal and L.G.U. Challenge Bowl and Donnelly .Cup,
