TEMUKA

BASKETBALL PROTEST DOMINION ASSOCIATION’S RULING Advice has been received that after consideration of the evidence taken in the Winchester Club's protest, the New Zealand Basketball Association is of the opinion that the Temuka SubAssociation's protest committee found correctly, and the game between Winchester and Temuka Young Women must be replayed. For the last three months, or longer, the interest of the Temuka Sub-Association, and many supporters, has been engaged in following the protest sent forward to the association as a result of a senior B. competition match between the Young Women and Winchester. The match resulted in a draw, but in their protest Winchester claimed that the referee had failed to apply the advantage rule in respect of a goal scored by a Winchester forward, and that therefore the match points should be awarded to Winchester. After dealing with the case, and granting a re-hearing, the association s protest committee found that as the half-time score had not been announced, in compliance with one of the New Zealand Association’s rules, the match must be replayed. Winchester requested the opportunity to appeal to the New Zealand Association. This was granted, and the folio-wing ruling, vindicating the protest committee,’ has now' been received from the New Zealand Executive: — “I have to advise you that after full consideration of the above appeal, the Executive decided that as section 8,2 (c) of the New Zealand rules had not been complied with, the match in question must be replayed.” The Emergency Committee of the Temuka Sub-Association has decided that the match shall be played on Thursday. In an interview last evening the chairman of the local protest committee <Mr T. H. Paikii said that at no time during the consideration of the case by the New Zealand Association did the committee think that anything but the above finding would result. Throughout their dealing with the case, the committee had had the best advice available. “However, the whole affair is now cleaned up,” said Mr Paiki. “I am sure , that a great amount of good has been \ done by clearing up some little known points in the game, particularly with regard tto the advantage rule and the , administration of the rules governing ; referees' duties.” TEMUKA D.H.S.
