Allan Berry at the monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board, when the question of educational examinations as pertaining to the qualifications of intending nurses was under consideration. “Certificates do not make good nurses,” said Mr A. E. Bedford. “High qualifications in that respect do not always count.” The matter was not discussed further, no action being taken. The merits of the literary contents of New Zaland and overseas women’s magazines were discussed before the Tariff Commission at Auckland. A woman witness, interested in a New Zealand publication, produced sample copies of each type, and remarked that stories of an American type figured largely in competing overseas magazines. “Yours seem pretty snappy, you know,” commented Professor B. E. Murphy, a member of the commission thumbing the local publication. “Here is one story: ’How I Escaped From a Harem.”' The witness laughingly replied: “The public wants it.”

For the first tin-3 probably in the history of aviation a King, Queen, ■Crown Prince and Princess have made a trip together in one aeroplane. They were the King and Queen of the Belgians and the Duke and Duchess of Brabant. Their trip was made from Brussels to Antwerp over the docks there and back to Brussels in the Aurora, one of the Imperial Airways ’ new four-engined monoplanes, which is to be used in the India-Australia service. The machine was flown over to the Belgian capital at the express invitation of King Albert. After seeing it the King, who is a flying enthusiast —and recently travelled to the Belgian Congo in an Imperial Airways machine—at once wanted to try the new type of ’plane.
