PLEASANT POINT
SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Point District High School Committee was attended by Mrs Taylor, Miss Himc, Messrs Oborn (chairman), Rendell, Fopplewell, Dr Benham and Halkett (secretary). . Before commencing business the chairman moved a vote of sympathy to Miss Macßean on the loss of her father, and also to Mr and Mrs Thoreau in their loss of a son.—Carried. The headmaster (Mr J. J. McGuigan) reported as follows:—“The roll number for the past month was, primary 140 and secondary 48. This represents an increase of four in the primary and a decrease of one in the secondary department. The average attendance was 127.7 for the primary, and 46.7 in the secondary department. Several wet cold days had an adverse effect on the attendance. Since the beginning of the term, hot cocoa has been prepared and given out at lunch time. So far some 30 or 40 pupils have been taking advantage of this, the Committee providing the sugar and cocoa, and pupils bringing a supply of milk. Miss Dale commenced duties under the rationing scheme in place of Miss Howes. Miss Miller had relieved in the secondary department for a fortnight, in place of Miss MacBean, who was granted leave on account of a bereavement. The appeal to parents for the fuel and cocoa fund resulted in the sum of £6/11/- being contributed, with the probability of a further sum coming to hand. Two parents had promised a load of wood The Dental Nurse (Nurse Robertson) reported as follows: —Fillings, permanent teeth 145, temporary 415, extractions 2 and 60; other operations 280. The number of children treated was 121. . . .. , Mr Rendell as visitor, reported that everything was in fair order, but owing to alterations going on in the school and the new school in progress, it was difficult to recommend anything in the meantime. Correspondence was received from the following:—Mr T. D. Burnett M.P., Begg and Co. and Education Board. Repairs and alterations ,at the residence were left to the Board’s foreman, as were also renovation of desks and supply of new ones. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £l9/7/6. Dr Benham was appointed visitor for the month. The meeting night was fixed for the first Monday in July.
OPENING OF NEW SCHOOL. At a meeting of School Committee and members of the staff, it was decided that the opening function in connection with the new school be held on Thursday, July 6th at 2 p.m., to be followed by a euchre party and dance in the Town Hall in the evening. Correspondence was read from the Education Board intimating that four members of the Board, Messrs Benstead, Preen, Armltage and Smith, would be present, and Mr T. D. Burnett M.P. wrote stating that he was endeavouring to secure the Hon. John Bitchener to perform the opening ceremony. FOOTBALL. Playing on the Domain oval, High Cchool defeated Old Boys by 9 points to 8, after a closely contested game. Mr J. Dossett refereed.
