WAIMATE

RECORD FROST. The heaviest frost of the season, totalling 17 degrees, was recorded at the Waimate Observatory yesterday morning. RUGBY SUB-UNION. A meeting of delegates to the Waimate Rugby Sub-Union was held on Monday night. Present—Messrs D. Keyes (president), J. Dench, G. Kilworth, J. Heath, R. Eddy, A. Williams, J. Riach, A. Bringans, F. Mcßride, A. W. Sawell, J. Winning, H. V. Barford, V. M. Horn, and the secretary (Mr L. V. Brenton). The president extended a welcome to Mr Bringans as delegate of the Primary Schools’ Association. The secretary of the Southern Club wrote asking when K. Giles and C. Whatman, tw'O playing members who had left the district and returned, would be elegible to play for their Club.—lt was decided that the players be allowed to play immediately, provided they had not played this season in any other Union’s competition. T. Ward was added to the list of Old Boys’ senior players.

The Waimate Referees’ Association wrote expressing appreciation of the lecture on the rules of Rugby given by Mr H. C. Foster, and stating that the attendance at the lecture had been most disappointing. Mr Foster had offered to repeat the lecture this week.—lt was decided to write thanking Mr Foster for his lecture, and asking him if it would be convenient for him to repeat the lecture in two weeks’ time.

An application for two jerseys for the referees was granted, Mr Riach drew attention to the laxity of players in turning out to time, the rules providing for only a quarter of an hour's grace after starting time. He moved that the junior games be timed to start at 1.20, to allow the senior games to start to time. Mr Eddy opposed the motion, as many of the junior players had to travel a long distance to play. Mr Riach pointed out that the Glenavy Club players, who had the longest distance to travel, were the most punctual of any. Mr Riach’s motion was lost, and it was agreed to start all junior games punctually to time, otherwise the playing time of the game was liable to curtailment.

DRAW FOR THURSDAY. Senior. Huimai v. Old Boys, No. 2 ground, at 2.45; referee, Mr F. Mcßride; line umpires, Mer*rs G. Hunt and J. Riach. Southern v. Marist, No. 1 ground, at 2.45; referee, Mr J. K. Clarke; line umpires, Messrs B. Walker and J. Anicich. Junior. Huimai v. Glenavy, No. 2 ground, at 1.30; referee, Mr J. V. Riach; line umpires, Messrs S. Jeffs and A. Williams. Old Boys v. Southern. No. l ground, at 1.30; referee, Mr F. Wilce; line umpires, Messrs L. A. Betten and I. Robinson. Third Graue. Primary B v. High School, at High School, at 3 p.m.; referee, Mr J. Blackaby; line umpires to be arranged. Primary A v. Convent, No. 3 ground, at 3 p.m.: referee. Mr J. Thyne; line umpires to be arranged. Junior Players. Mr Mcßride said that he had heard a good deal of comment regarding High School boys having to meet much heavier and older men who comprised the Glenavy junior team. Mr Horn moved that a sub-com-mittee should watch the games on Thursday next with a view to regrading. Mr Sawell -emarked that last year the members of the Glenavy team did not know how to use their weight, a disadvantage which had been overcome by practice. The position was that parents were taking the attitude of refusing to allow their boys to play against men so much superior in age and weight. Mr Williams said that he had brought the matter up at the annual general meeting, and he was pleased that it was now being ventilated. Mr Eddy remarked that the age of 25 years had been mentioned in connection with a Glenavy player, but they could accept his assurance that this was incorrect.. An accident had happened to a High School player simply owing to the injured boy misjudging his distance in tackling. Mr Riach said that the grading had been done at the start of the season, and Union members had seen Glenavy play and were satisfied with their status. Mr Sawell moved that the grading be lefu as at present, as it would not be fair to re-grade a team owing to their improved play due to practice and training. Such a course would upset the team which had been built up, as Mr Eddy had suggested, by the enthusiasm displayed in a country district. It was decided to take no action in j the matter. Primary School Seven-a-Side. Mr Bringans said that he thought that it would be in the best interests of Rugby to have the primary seven-a-side tournament run as a separate fixture. If the suggestion were put into operation probably much larger entries would be obtained, as more

support would be forthcoming from School Committees, and also from parents. Under the supervision of the teachers also, there would be a better system of control, and If the suggestion were adopted, the Sub-Union could concentrate on their separate competition.

The president said that the matter had been discussed the previous week, and it had been decided to offer the schools a Saturday for their competition.

Mr Bringans suggested a Friday would be a more suitable day. Mr Eddy sail that some years ago a separate schools’ tournament was held, when smal schools had been allowed to combine to enable them to enter a team. This had proved successful. and they might find that perhaps the extra outside entries anticipated for the Sub-Union's fixture might not materialise, and it might suffer through the absence of school teams.

Messrs Horn and Keyes pointed out that in recent years school entries had fallen off.

Mr Riach favoured a separate school competition, but he did not see how the fixture could be held on a Friday owing to the difficulty of providing referees and supervisors. After further discussion, the question of a suitable date was brought up, and it was eventually decided to hold the matter over pending further investigations by both the Sub-Union and the School Sports’ Association. The usual grant was made to the Mount Parker School towards the purchase of a school football. The secretary reported that the takings last week were:—MOrven, 15/11; Waimate, £2/10/6; and the credit balance at the Post Office amounted to £B/5/2. TEAMS FOR THURSDAY.
