A dance will be held in the Fire Station to-night. The usual novelty dances will be held, and a good evening's entertainment is assured.

“Recently, for the first time in 70 years, Waikato Maoris came to us asking to be confirmed,” stated Bishop Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Auckland, on Sunday evening. He said that very little headway had been made among the Natives of the district in all that time. The Waikato people had felt the effects of the wars with the pakehas perhaps more than other Maoris, and there had been a feeling that the Church came from the pakehas. It was significant that one of those who came recently was a man of over 70 years of age. That man had explained that he felt impelled to offer himself, body and soul, for confirmation in the service of God.

A mass meeting of the wives of Timaru unemployed will be held in the Wentworth Hall on Thursday next at 2.30 to petition the Government to abolish stand down week and to increase the Timaru relief workers weekly wage.

An average weight of 85 tons of pumpkins to the acre has been the return this season of Mr H. Ellis, of Eskdale, Hawke’s Bay, who sowed five acres in three different varieties. He attributed his success to regular and consistent cultivation, right up to the time when the growth of runners made the continuance of this work an impossibility. The weight of French cattle pumpkin averaged nearly 95 tons an acre, while the red pumpkin averaged over 85 tons and the ironbark over 75 tons. Average yield over all five acres and including all three strains was over 85 tons an acre.
