DEVELOPMENT OF GIFT LANDS. By Telegraph — Association WELLINGTON, June 7. Referring to the gift of a thousand acres by Mr E. Vaile, at Rotorua, the Minister of Lands (Hon. E. A. Ransom) said to-day that development of the area would be pushed ahead Immediately under the supervision of Mr J. S. Jessep, deputy-chairman of the Unemployment Board. Those engaged in the work of improvement would be given opportunity of taking up sections.
The Minister said they had between four and five thousand acres of undeveloped land to take In hand immediately. He was directing the Small Farms Board to take up with the Unemployment Board the work of rehabilitating Crown securities which had fallen back into the hands of the State Lending Department.
Miss M. C. Scriven (England), who beat Mile. Rene Mathieu (France), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, in the women’s singles in the French national tournament, and thus became the first Englishwoman to win the French singles championship. Miss Scriven, who is aged 20, was overlooked by the British selectors and went to Paris on her own initiative, paying her own expenses. Miss Scriven’s greater variety of strokes enabled her to reverse her defeat at Wimbledon in 1931. Partnered by J. B.
