WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
GERALDINE. The monthly meeting of the Geraldine Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday evening, when, despite wintry conditions, there was a good attendance. The president (Miss M. Cruickshank) occupied the chair, and the meeting was opened with the singing of the Institute song. A motion of sympathy with Mrs A. J. Burmester, in the death of her mother, was carried, members standing in silence. Mesdames P. Russell, H. F. Bennett, Simmons, Southerland, Broad, Loach, Grandi, McCullough, and Misses A. Waye, G. Woolhouse and D. Maister were elected new members. Mrs J. P. Cliff was appointed delegate to the Women’s Institutes’ Federation Conference, to be held in Christchurch. Invitations were received to the Hilton and Woodbury Institutes’ birthday parties. Arrangements were made for helpers at the Geraldine Institute’s birthday party on June 15th, and at the arts and crafts exhibition in Timaru. Mrs G. A. Davey (Rangitira Valley), who gave an interesting and comprehensive address on knitting, displayed some beautiful garments. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Davey, and also to .Mrs Cliff, who had donated printed copies of the Institute song Competitions resulted as follows: Socks, Mrs Mitchelmore, Mrs Rule and Miss Grant; covered boxes, Mrs Knibb and Mrs Firman; supper savouries, Mrs Knibb, Mrs Greyburn and Mrs Mitchelmore. The hostesses were Mesdames Armstrong, Cairns, G. H. Bryant, Davis (2), Dean, Ellis, and Miss Bennett.
