The rain cleared away towards Saturday morning, and 5 degrees of frost were registered.

THE ELECTIONS.

The number of votes published on Saturday, as having been secured by Councillor J. Gourley at last week’s election in Temuka, was incorrect. On Wednesday night Councillor Gourley was credited with 354 votes, nit 384, and the recount reduced this total to 349. It is interesting to note that Mr L. G. Scrimshaw', who was only a few votes below the ninth councillor elected, stood for the Council 20 years ago, and was defeated by 1 vote by Mr G. W. Armitage. GOLF. Teams of 12 ladies and 12 men from the Glen-iti Golf Club played at Temuka on Saturday, Temuka winning an enjoyable game by 14 games to 10. The home members supplied afternoon tea, which was dispensed by Mrs T. E. Shiels, Mrs F. C. May and Miss McShane. Following are the scores (Temuka names first):: —

PERSONAL.

Mrs Fairbrother, Napier, arrived in Temuka on Saturday to visit her mother Mrs F. Beri, who is in bad health. BASKETBALL NOTES. With the first series of games played, the championship points secured by teams in the competitions are as follow: Senior. •s J o sg * v a 'S « & >» C -e g e fl i J2 jS q is © o si CL > 3 Q b CL D St. Joseph’s 1 1 0 0 12 4 2

Arowhenua v. Geraldine United will be played later. Not only in the matter of increased entries is the interest in local basketball greater than ever this year, but it is reflected in the increase in the number of spectators. Someone remarked at Thursday’s matches that it would have paid the association to have taken up a collection! Present indications are that St. Joseph’s will again be contenders for the senior championship. Showing improved domination, despite the absence of K. Spillane in the defence, the team out-generalled Clandeboye, who nevertheless plaj’ed a fine game. The activity of the Spillane combination in the centre kept the forwards well supplied, and the defence was better than in past seasons. A rest of eight months has effected

many great changes in the playing strength of several junior teams. Pleasant Point, who last season were low down on the championship table, bid fair to win the shield this year, while Milford will miss the presence of five of last year’s champion side. Clandeboye is an unknown quantity as yet. for the St. Joseph's team that opposed them on Thursday was several players short, and Arowhenua has not appeared in competition play. Kerrytown, from all accounts, although a little unfinished in style have the makings of a strong combination. Spectators at the Temuka Domain would be well advised to keep a yard or two back from the side-lines during play. Crowding around, does not give either the referee or the players a fair chance to throw-in properly. Changes in the personnel of the Young Women's senior team apparently have not impaired its efficiency. At Pleasant Point on Thursday they came out of a very hard match two clear goals to the good. B. Cook and E. Dale, comparatively new to their position in the team’s forward line, were easily as good as the players they have replaced, and the defenders maintained the reliability that they have shown for two seasons. Miss Dale, it will be remembered, played a very consistent game at centre in former seasons, and Miss Cook is a recruit straight from High School. The performances of the team will be watched with interest. With the increased number of teams, the senior B grade had to come, and there will be few who will not agree that its inauguration was necessary. The disparity between senior B play and that of the higher grade was apparent at the Domain where matches in both sections were played almost at the same time. High School showed good form, but seemed to lack confidence. This may come, with more experience of club play. Their opponents, Seadown, fielded a fairlystrong team, and might easily have won had they possessed more combination. Winchester appear to be one of the strongest sides in the grade, the strengthening of last year’s forwards having the effect of enabling them to round off the movements initiated by the centres. At the Domain many people were attracted to the first match of the new High School Old Girls juniors, who opposed Milford. The scores were a fair indication of the merits of the teams, neither side playing good basketball, although the match was interesting. Competition should quicken the passing movements of Old Girls and give more confidence to the goal shooters. Milford were a better combination than many people had been led to believe they would be, and by the end of the season it will not be surprising if they are somewhere near the top of the championship table. Draw for Season. The draw for the senior and senior B grades for the season has now been completed. It is as follows: Senior. May 11th:—Clandeboye v.
