The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs William Doig. of Christchurch, was celebrated at their residence on Saturday evening, most of the family, including the grandchildren, being present, with a large number of friends. Many enjoyable musical and elocutionary items were rendered, and, in the dining room where supper was spread, toasts were drunk and family memories and traditions recalled, everyone passing a very pleasant evening. The happy couple were the recipients of many beautiful presents, including a five-valve radio set, and many congratulatory telegrams and letters were read. On Monday afternoon, Mrs Doig entertained a number of old and valued friends at Ballantyne’s, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Mrs Doig (nee Torrance) was an early resident of Timaru, having landed here in 1864 on the “Mermaid,” and consequently saw, and experienced a great deal of the hardships, which fell to the lot of the early settlers. Mr Doig landed at Lyttelton, and migrated south to Timaru, where he married Miss Torrance in 1883. They will be remembered by many of the older Timaru residents for they lived here for seme years prior to leaving for Christchurch.
