WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SHERWOOD DOWNS. ,s The annual meeting of the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute, which was held on March 14th, took the form of a social evening at which the men of the district were the guests of the Institute. There was a very good attendance, visitors being present from Timaru, Ashwick Flat, and Kimbell, to whom a welcome was extended by the president as (Mrs A. Mackenie). Apologies were t. received from Mrs West and Miss >v Riddle, and from Mrs Armitage, Mr y ’ John Bray and Mr Creighton. In the annual report on the Institute’s activities during the year, the president said that interesting and a helpful demonstrations had been given *e on wool quilts, poultices, making the bed with the patient in it, dyeing, and k making a rug of raw wool, barbola 2P I work, making of a dressmaker’s model, knitted snow leggings, wool rug from I discarded underwear, knitted bed--1 jacket, school girl’s gymnasium dress, ie making a Scotch bun, dress-cutting and fitting, arranging flowers for exd hibition, puff pastry, seagrass stools, t, making a patchwork quilt, a talk on Maori myths and legends, folk danc--11 ing. and a trip through Scotland. Members were congratulated on the j keen interest they displayed in com--0 ! petitions, also in having supported the ” I Red Cross Society, Women’s Institute r j Depot, and the Dramatic Circle. Mrs | Mackenzie personally expressed apprep ciation of the loyal co-operation of : members, and the enthusiastic support L | of the Committee .with a special word 9 | of praise for the work of the secretary ? | (Miss Riddle). v j Thanks were accorded the School j Committee for the use of school, crock - ' ; ery and firing; the demonstrators and 2 lecturers; the judges of competitions: • the Press reporters; the auditor, Mr F. 5 Carter; the scrutineers. Messrs Harper and S. P. Bray; and Mrs West for , practical interest in the Institute. L The balance sheet showed a credit r of £l/16/-. , The following were elected to the Committee:—President, Mrs A. Mac- [ kenzie (re-elected); vice-president, . Mrs Harper; secretary, Miss Riddle (re-elected); treasurer, Mrs Reid (re- ■ elected); and Mesdames Carter, S. P. Bray, Ross, Anniss and A. P. Bray. Mrs Mackenzie was then presented . with a bouquet by Mrs Carter, in recognition of her splendid work as 1 president. Mesdames Carter and S. P. Bray ] were elected delegates to the Ffedera- ] tion in April. A competition for potatoes grown from seed donated by Mrs Ross, resulted as follows:—Mrs Galagher (with ; 291 b) 1. Mrs Ross (with 281 b) 2, Mrs ' Reid (with 24?.1b) 3. The total entry, two sacks of potatoes, was afterwards - sent to the Fairlie Benevolent Society. * A competition, a musical romance. J was then held, illustrating the songs 1 of Ireland. This was written by Mrs * Goulter, of Kimbell, to music provided * by Mrs W. Allan, of Ashwick. The winners were: Ladies, Mrs Reid; 1 gentlemen, Messrs A. and C. Reid. 1 Irish songs were sung by Mr C. Reid Dancing was then indulged in, after which cheers were given for the Insti- b tute by the guests and visitors*
