TRANSPORT ACT
TIMARU CARRIERS' PETITION. Some time ago the carriers of South Canterbury handed the following petition to the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., for presentation to Parliament.—“We, the undersigned carriers of South Canterbury, view with alarm the propaganda of the vested interests through the various chambers of commerce to delay the bringing into operation of the regulation of the goods services under the Licensing Transport Act. We consider that Government control of motor transport is essential to the future welfare of this country and pray that the Transport Act be brought into full operation and thereby prevent the disorganised and uneconomic system at present in vogue." Yesterday Mr Carr received the following communication from the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates: “I am in receipt of your letter of the 6th instant in which you forward on behalf of Mr W. J. Clarke, of Timaru, a petition from carriers of South Canterbury praying that the regulations dealing with the control of goods services under the Transport Licensing Act be brought into operation. I am at present considering the representations that have been made in connection with the proposed regulations and have to thank the South Canterbury carriers for their interest in the matter. I shall be pleased to give their petition my very careful consideration."
