BAND CONTEST AT ASHBURTON.
To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald.” Sir, —I regret very much that anything in the shape of a controversy should spring up on the above subject between Timaru and Geraldine. There has always been a marked friendship between Geraldine and Timaru Bandsmen. Timaru has helped the local Band on many occasions.
During the training for the above contest, Lieutenant Osborne has given Geraldine Band every assistance, and came out to two practices, and gave the Geraldine Band the benefit of his experience, which advice helped considerably to the final result. I do not think for a moment that the Timaru bandsmen are putting up the howls which are appearing in your paper, or that of your contemporary. Geraldine Band -went to Ashburton as a green country band, fully prepared to accept last place if they were awarded it. They further agreed not to reply to the criticism or to enter into any argument on the subject, but after reading the letter in this morning’s “Herald” signed by “Credit Where Due,” I think it only right to add my few remarks and to disclaim any knowledge of such. The Geraldine Band are of course delighted to have put up a performance which evidently pleased the judge, and I myself was agreeably surprised at the performance our boys put up, and evidently the judge thought it worthy of the points he gave us. I trust the last has been heard of the matter as no good purpose can be gained by extending the discussion, and I should be sorry to see any ill-feeling developed between Timaru and Geraldine.—l am, etc., HON. CONDUCTOR, Geraldine District Band. Geraldine, 14/10/32.
