BOROUGH COUNCIL. A meeting of the Waimate borough Council was held on Tuesday night. Present—The Mayor (Mr G. Dash', Councillors W. G. Paul. T. Twomey. C. T. Hodges. R. H. White,' J. 'T. Hav, G. F. Condolence. > The Mayor moved thait a message qf condolence be sent to the widow and family ofithe late William Edgar Evans, who had so long and assiduously served the Borough as Councillor and as Mayor. Mr Evans had served as a Councillor In 1910, as a worthy successor to his father, who, as Councillor Thomas Evans, served the Borough from 1879 to 1897. For eight years as I Councillor and then for two' years as Mayor, and another two as Councillor, and again for two years as Mayor. Mr Evans had retained the confidence of the burgesses, and gave to their service the full of his ability and enthusiasm. Such protracted service should impel the younger generation to recognise their duty toward the community, and render their portion of that public work without which the affairs of the Borough could not progress. This reference to the world and work of William Edgar Evans should be inscribed in the minute book of the Council. The motion was carried in silence. Correspondence. Mrs E. G. Hutt wrote tendering thanks for a message of condolence on the death of her father. Mr C. Wheeler. The secretary of the Mackenzie Traffic Group wrote stating that the matter of the insurance of the Area Traffic Inspector had been referred to the Finance Committee for a report. The report of a meeting of Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and Westland subscribers to the Cancer Campaign was received, and laid on the table. The report stated that the Mayor of Waimate had been appointed a permanent member of the General Committee. ■the Municipal Association of New Zealand wrote enclosing a copy of a resolution carried at the recent Hospital Boards Conference, recommending that the amount of hospital and charitable aid rates be shown separately on rate demands.—Referred to the Finance Committee. The Department of Health advised that it had been authorised to offer 81 per cent, reduction in the levies for payment of expenses and salary of the Health Inspector, the half-yearly contribution of the Borough now being £2O/18/6, a reduction of- about £3 per annum. The Mayor and Councillor Hodges ! ’Chairman of the Sanitary Committee) both stated that the Borough had made wide use of the Inspector, whose services were highly satisfactory.—The letter was received. The Waimate Caledonian Society wrote applying for a donation of £5 towards the prize fund for the Waimate to Christchurch road race.—On the motion of Councillors Good and Fitch, the amount was granted, and permission was granted to rope off a portion of Street at the starting point. The Waimate High School Board wrote asking that, in view of the present state of their finances, the Council would renew the lease of sections in Michael and Studholme Streets at a nominal rental of £l/1/-.—The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee. with pow’er to act. Mr W. Horgan, secretary of St. G rick's Tennis Club, wrote applying for the use of the spare tennis court at Victoria Park for two months, on the same terms as those granted to St. Paul’s Club.—Granted. The reDOrts of the Borough foreman and the Borough gardener were laid on the table. General Business. The tender of the Waimate Mover Service Company of £4/18/7 for overhauling the fire engine was accepted.. An application from Mr O. J. F. McKee. hon. secretary of the Waimate Unemployed Workers’ Union, for use of the Council Chambers to hold a meeting on October 6th, was “received, ’ there being no resolution forthcoming. Councillor Hodges drew attention to the anomalies at present existing in the charges for sewer connections. Councillors Good, Hay and Paul concurred in the views set forth by the speaker that owners of vacant sections were actually paying for what they did not get, and to encourage people to build on the drainage area, the clerk was ordered to frame a by-jaw to be brought before next meeting, to provide that the Council in future bear the cost of bringing the sewerage connections to the boundary of each assessment free of charge. Drainage extension loan accounts amounting to £2O, ana general accounts (including £490 for relief wages) totalling £670/10/1, were passed for payment.
