At a conference of mining managers and members of the local Miners’ Union at Broken Hill, Mr H. Emery, on behalf of the employers, said the mining industry at Broken Hill was living on the exchange rate. The cash possessed by companies was exhausted. The industry would have closed twelve months ago, but for large reserves. He added that prices for metals were low, and there was going to be much unemployment unless costs were reduced.
