CRUEL HOAX ON LINDBERGH
KIDNAPPERS PLAY FALSE HOLD CHILD ALTHOUGH PAID RANSOM United Press Association—By Electric Tel egrp ph—Copyright (Received April 10, 6.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 9. Colonel Lindbergh revealed to-night that a cruel hoax had been pepetrated on him by the kidnappers of his son. He announced that a ransom of 50,000 dollars had been paid them, after proper identification, upon an agreement to notify him of the exact whereabout of the baby, but the child had not been found at the designated point. Several days were then permitted to elapse to give the abductors every opportunity to keep their promise. When hope was abandoned that they would fulfil their agreement, the aid of the Federal Treasury was sought to trace the bank notes used. A circular was sent by the Department to banks in the country, asking the tellers to be on the lookout for specified bank note numbers. This became known to-day, after which Colonel Lindbergh asked the Press to suppress the fact, but in many cases the news had already been published, upon which Colonel Lindbergh issued a statement in which he reiterated his promise “not to try to injure” the kidnappers, if only they would return the baby.
