Deliberate defiance of a Magistrate’s order in banning a procession led to a grave outbreak of rioting, in Allahabad. Mrs Motllal Nehru was struck on the head by a stone, and a number of police were injured. One constable had an arm blown off by a bomb flung from the railway bridge. A mob kept a running fight along the road. Electric lines and standards were pulled down and the city was plunged into darkness for hours. Armed pickets are now in control.
