Forty-five men were requ'red to go to Waimiha Camp near Taumarunui, leaving on Friday night, but only twenty-six actually entrained. The trouble was caused by agitators encouraging the men who had already signified their willingness to go to camp to join a demonstrat'on protesting against the camp principle and this morning a crowd of about 2000 assembled at Te Aroha Post Office seeking an interview with the local Unemployment Committee. Members of the committee afterwards waited on the Unemployment Board asking for inform.! - tion regarding the scheme and were told that every registered single unemployed man was affected by the scheme. This information was later conveyed to another crowd in the Corporation Yard and was received witn a certain amount of hostility. The crowd of 2000, acting under misapprehension, marched away to the bottom of The Terrace to the office of the former Unemployment Commissioner—the Government Statistician—but on being informed of their mistake, they dispersed after listening to speeches.
