No. 5 SCHEME

SUSPENDED IN COUNTIES. MEN REFUSING HARVEST WORK. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. January 27. Because it is attracting men from harvesting work, the No. 5 scheme is to be suspended from February Ist in many counties of Canterbury. The Paparua. Halswell, Malvern and Sehvyn Councils have already had notification of suspension of the scheme, and it is understood that other Councils may be notified within the next few days. A number of complaints have been received by the Board that men are staying on relief works, and refusing to acept the lower wages now offered for harvesting, although in the aggregate these wages are still greater than those given for relief work.
