BOWLING.

SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE. At a meeting of the South Canterbury Bowling Centre there were present—Messrs. T. Currie (president), J. Moyes, E. Darroch. A. R. Clark. R. G. Sampson. R. Shillito, D. Mcnzies and F. B. Hawkey. Brief discussion took place regarding the Christmas tournament, the secretary (Mr. A. Thoreau) being instructed to prepare a balance sheet for the next meeting. It was decided that the postponed match between Fairlie and Geraldine be played on February 4. Some discussion ensued relative to the date of the Bristol Cup match, Ashbury v. Kia Tea. The date set down in the Centre’s schedule (January 30) was unsuitable to Kia Toa. as they had to play their annual fixture with Awamoa, at Oamaru. The fact that it was a public holiday also proved an obstacle A suggestion that the match be played on January 9, 23 or in the evening proved inconvenient for Ashbury, whilst January 16 and 30 clashed with fixtures with the Oamaru Clu'. so far as Kia Toa w r ere concerned. Considerable divergence of opinion was evident, and Mr. Darroch submitted the proposal that the match be played on cither February 6, 20 or 27, the winners to play Waimate on the following Thursday. This was seconded by Mr. Shillito. Mr. Hawkey stated he. with other members, had interviewed officials of the Ashbury Club, and found th~t they presented justifiable reasons lor not playing on previous optional dates proposed by Kia Toa. When put to the meeting, the motion was lost, the general feeling being thet as the clubs could not mutually agr e upon an alternative date, the match should be played in accordance with the Centre’s schedule. Positions in the various competitions revealed the following leading teams: Saturday championship—Timaru. Saturday Pennants—Timaru B. Thursday Pennants—Timaru and Temuka. The secretary was instructed to urge the club to play the remaining games as early as possible. A vacancy occurred on the match committee, through the removal of Mr. Callender. Mr. Sampson was chosen to fill the vacancy. The position of treasurer, also unfilled, was delegated by Mr. Moyes. Mr. Moyes reported on the proceedings at the annual meeting of the Dominion Council, held recently in Christchurch, at the time of the Dominion tournament. As South Canterbury delegates. Mr. Currie and he had placed a resolution to the meeting that an interprovincial South Island championship tournament should be played annually, of six rinks. At first, the proposal did not meet with much support, but Mr. Moyes contended that visiting players could be billeted out by the home bowlers, and thus reduce expense to a minimum. This proposal completely altered the feeling of the meeting, he said, and the resolution was carried. He was also pleased to advise the Centre that the first tournament would be played in Timaru. probably in February, 1933. The provincial boundaries were altered to ensure the selection of good teams. Mr. Currie supplemented Mr. Moyes’ remarks, and the meeting favourably received the report. A motion was passed thanking the delegates for the successful way they had fulfilled their duties.
