SWIMMING

MEETING OF SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE. Matters relating to the Dominion swimming championships, to be held in Timaru, from February 13 to 17 next, were discussed in detail at a meeting of the South Canterbury Swimming Centre, which was held last night. There were present—Mr H. H. Fraser (president), Mrs A. Morrison, Messrs J. Lewis, A. Morrison. F. G. Raymond, M. S. Bracefield. M. O’Meeghan, W. Sutherland. S. Lyttle, N. Preddy, J. Kay and W. Carlton (secretary). Referring to lighting in the dressing sheds at the baths, the secretary (Mr W. Carlton ( reported that lights had been installed, and quite a satisfactory job had been made. It was stated that arrangements had been made for a loud soeaker to be tried out at the carnival this week, and if a success, then this system would be adopted at the New Zealand championships instead of posting results on a board. The Council of the New Zealand Swimming Association wrote stating that the Dominion Council of the Royal Life Saving Society had requested that there should be free affiliation between head centres of the R.L.S.S., but it had been decided to refer the matter to the conference of centres, to be held in Timaru. The New Zealand Association advised that it had been decided to hold the annual conference of centres in Timaru on February 16. It w’as stated that a conference of diving judges and divers would be held during the championship meeting with the object of bringing all diving matters up to date. A request had been made by the Centre to the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association for matches to be postponed on Saturday, February 13th, and in reply, the secretary of the Association stated it was not possible to postpone all matches, but any teams whose members desired to attend the swimming championships would be allowed to postpone their games. In any case, only three games were set down for the date in question. The secretary reported that so far no reply had been received from the South Canterbury Cricket Association in regard to the same matter.

A letter was received from the Hawke’s Bay Centre thanking the local Centre for a donation. Although the Hawke’s Bay Centre had practically been cleaned out financially as a result of the earthquake, the Centres of New Zealand had been very good, and as a result clubs and the Centre had again been able to make a start. They were hoping this season to bring the sport back to its old position in the province.

It was decided to forward the following remit for discussion at the annual conference: “That a recommendation be made to the Ne\v Zealand Association that the question of procuring future championship medals in New Zealand be seriously considered." Arrangements in connection with the picnic for visiting and local swimmers taking part in the championships, were discussed at some length. The picnic is to be held at Temuka. Matters relating to the championship dance were also advanced a further stage. The following officials w’ere appointed for the Speechly Mile, to be swum on Saturday. February 6:— Referee. Mr H. H. Fraser; starter. Mr A. E. Horwell; time-keepers. Messrs M. Dunn, W. S. Young and J. Fraser; check starters and judges. Messrs W. Sutherland, F. G. Raymond, M. O’Meeghan: turning point stewards, Messrs A. Provan. M. S. Bracefield, J. Lewis; boat steward, Mr S. Lyttle. On behalf of the trustees of the Swifts Swimming Club. Mr Raymond presented a cup to the Centre. It was decided to accept the cup, and to allocate it for the 440 yards handicap. A letter of thanks is to be forwarded to the trustees.
