MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Committee of the South Canterbury Automobile Association was held last night. Present —Messrs J. Palliser (chairman), N. M. Orbell, G. A. Bridges, Robt. Wilson, J. H. Don, and J. M. Jenkins. The Waimate County Council wrote stating that the engineer had been instructed to report on the Association’s complaint regarding two bad dips on the main highway near Morven and Glenavy. Mr Jenkins said that the complaint he had made at last meeting was not in regard to the dips near Morven and Glenavy, but at a spot just north of the Waihao Bridge. It was agreed to correct the location of the complaint, in a further letter to the County Council. A letter was received from the North Otago Motor Association, advising that the Waitaki County Council had promised to repair the approaches at the second bridge after crossing the Waitaki River. The engineer, the letter continued, desired motorists to use more care in the use of these bridges by slowing down, instead of travelling fast and tearing up the approaches. He could not agree to the removal of the posts, as these acted as a guide to the edge of the bridge, particularly at night. Acknowledgment of a copy of the Association’s proposed new rules was made by the Registrar of Incorporated Societies, who pointed out that the rules wtre quite in order. The chairman and Mr Jenkins submitted their report on the annual meeting of the South Island Motor Union, at which they represented the Association. Mention of the dust danger, and the possibility of an increased highway paving programme, was made by Mr Jenkins, who moved that the Motor Union be asked to approach the Main Highways Board with a view to ascertaining what steps could be taken to effectively combat the dust danger on the highways. The motion was carried.

Writing in regard to the proposed inauguration of school traffic patrols, the chairman of the Timaru Headmasters’ Association (Mr W. W. Garton), stated that headmasters were prepared to support the Association in the matter. In view of the situation of the Timaru West School, it was considered that a patrol was not warranted there.

The chairman said that school patrols had operated in Dunedin for four years, and since their commencement there had never been an accident.

It was decided that the chairman confer with Traffic Inspector Newcome with a view to putting the scheme in operation. Badges are to be procured by the Association for the boys selected. Inquiries were made by the Geraldine Borough Council as to what assistance would be forthcoming from the Association if a camping place was established in Geraldine Domain. Members favoured a grant of £lO, providing that the programme and facilities were along the lines of other camping places that the Association had assisted.

New members elected were:—Messrs J. Cormack, A. Grandi. A. Hobbs, A. W. Kelman, E. A. Sinclair. C. Tavlor, R. Tonkin. G. G. Triggs, R. A. Wilkie. N. Brown, C. E. Morgan, K. Hitch and V. F. Melville.

Accounts amounting to £57/10/- were passed for payment.
