WAIMATE.

OPENING OP BOWLING SEASON. The Waimate Bowling Club’s season was officially opened yesterday by the Mayor (Mr G. Dash). There was a | large attendance, the weather was fine | and sunny, and the green was in excellent order. Visiting bowlers were present from Ashbury, Kia Toa, Park, and Highfield Clubs (Timaru), and Phoenix and Meadowbank Clubs (Camaru), and the Blenheim Club also was represented. An interesting ceremony was the presentation of leather medals to four members of the Club who had been over twenty-five years members of the Club—Messrs F. Akhurst (present president and president twenty-five years ago), A. Inkster, P. Grant, and C. G. Holmes. The president (Mr Akhurst) welcomed the visitors, and trusted that the coming season would be a successful and pleasant one. He referred to the damage to the pavilion by the blowing off of the roof during the recent gale, and mentioned that the question had been discussed of replacing with a closed-in verandah. Twenty-five years ago he had been president of the Club, and he stated that he was very proud to be again placed in the position. He did not remember when the other three old members had joined, but Mr Grant had played his first foreign match on January Bth, 1903, followed closely by Mr Inkster, and later by Mr Holmes. Mr Akhurst then called on Mr E. Darroch, the Club’s representative on the Centre. Mr Darroch expressed the hope that the season would be pleasant and enjoyable to members of the Club, and that it would gain its share of success in the competitions. He thanked the Club for the compliment to himself and to Kia Toa Club in asking him to represent it on the Centre. The Mayor (Mr G. Dash) first congratulated Mr Akhurst on carrying the twenty-five years he had done, and congratulated the Club in catering for a recreation which had kept Mr Akhurst so young. He said he had great pleasure in once more declaring the season open. Messrs Grant, Holmes and Inkster, on request, stepped forward to receive, , with the president, at the hands of the latter’s wife, leather medals presented by the president. They were accorded three cheers and were photographed. Mrs Akhurst (wife of the president) then played the first bowl. The official rink comprised Inkster, Akhurst, Grant and Holmes v. Moyes, Hunt, Stevenson and Farrar. BENEVOLENT SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Society was held recently, those present being Mesdames G. A. Manchester (in the chair), F. Nash, S. J. Adams, F. Akhurst, P. J. Cocks, E. C. Studholme, G. J. Shackleton and C. Coventry. Six applications for assistance were granted. The Arno Women’s Institute was thanked for a parcel of children’s garments and groceries. Mesdames Manchester and Adams were appointed visitors for the month. At the close of the meeting members were invited by the president (Mrs Manchester) to partake of afternoon tea. An opportunity was thus afforded Mrs Manchester to express the great regret the Committee felt at the forthcoming departure of Mrs P. J. Cocks. In asking Mrs Cocks to accept a small present as a memento of the cordial relations existing, Mrs Manchester expressed the hope that Mrs Cocks would have a happy trip to England and a safe return to New Zealand. Mrs Cocks feelingly replied. A surprise awaited Mrs Coventry, when she too was presented by Mrs Manchester with a handsome brass vase from the members of the committee, in appreciation of her services as honorary secretary and treasurer of the Society over a period of nine years. In thanking the members for their charming gift, Mrs Coventry assured them that anything she had done had been a delight to her and a labour of love. OPENING OF CRICKET SEASON. The newly-formed Waimate Cricket Club were favoured with fine weather, and the opening of their season at Victoria Park yesterday afternoon was highly successful. Those present included more than sufficient players to make a full eleven-a-side game, and the officials wisely decided to give all who wished a place in the presidents v. vice-presidents match played during the afternoon, when excellent form was shown both with the bat and ball. Messrs S. F. and F. J. Bailey, president and secretary respectively, of the newly-formed Morven Club, were present by invitation, and held a short conference with the Waimate officials with regard to the composition of the terms to play in the competitions during the season. It was decided to form an Association, and to run a onegrade competition in which the Waimate Club will play two teams, and Waimate High School and Morven Clubs one each. It was stated that there was a likelihood of a club being formed at Glenavy, and that there was

a prospect of several Willowbridge players joining up with Morven in the event of no club being formed in their own district, which points to there being every prospect of six teams entering for the competition. Prior to Mr T. H. Stevens, president of the Waimate Club, calling on the Mayor to open the season, he said that there appeared every chance of the good old game being revived in Waimate. There was excellent support forthcoming from a likely crowd of young players, both in Waimate and also in Morven and Glenavy. The Mayor and the Borough Council had lent invaluable assistance in preparing the wicket, and in granting the use of grounds which not only provided a fine playing area, but had the added attraction of being one of the most picturesque in the Dominion. He had much pleasure in calling on the Mayor to declare the season open. Mr Dash said it was 51 years since a match was played in the district, this taking place at Otaio, and 47 years ago the first match was played in Waimate. There seemed no reason why two teams should not be raised for the Waimate Club, judging by the large number of players present, and as the president had said the appearance of the ground alone was sufficient to guarantee a good attendance of spectators. He hoped the beauty of the | Park would not take the players’ attention off their game. Mr Dash then referred to some incidents in Waimate cricket in the past, and wished the Club every success and declared the season open. President’s v. Vice-President’s Match. Gourley won the toss and sent his side into bat, Wilce opening to the bowling of T. H. Stevens. He hit 10 off the first four balls, but had a life next ball at square leg. and was bowled with the first ball of Thompson’s opening over. The same bowler got Carr’s middle stump next ball. Bird opened with a boundary off Thompson, but succumbed to the second ball of his next over. 800 l opened quietly, but later drove Thompson twice in succession and got Stevens away for a four and three singles. Boyd secured a boundary, and two singles, and was then bowled by Thompson,' making four wickets down for 2. Two runs later 800 l was run out. E. Hicks replaced Thompson, and Vidal took over from Stevens. After making seven in attractive style, Betten skied a rising ball which was taken by Stevens near the boundary. Hansen and Gourley carried on. the latter opening out to a full toss from Hicks which he lifted to the fence for four. Hansen hit one from Vidal’s next over for a similar score. Brown, a fast bowler, and Jones now took up the attack. The former failed to find a length at the start, but the rate of scoring steadied down, the batsmen being content with an occasional smartly run single. Hansen fell a victim to a good ball from Jones which swung in. Sawell was next and appeared uncomfortable facing Jones, who got Gourley in his next over. Jones was turning the ball nicely and keeping a good length. He narrowly missed Sawell’s wicket with a ball which kept low. Kilworth failed to stay long, Jones dislodging his bails with a beauty. Tooley and Sawell were out without increasing the score, and Cadwallader, after scoring a boundary, was caught off a no-ball from Stevens. Anderson lifted Carter out of the ground for the first six of the game. Cadwallader got a nice boundary in Stevens’s next over, and this pair carried on till Anderson retired unbeaten with a score of 30. Jones came on again and bowled the first maiden over of the day. Calder was run out in Thompson’s next over, and the innings closed for 132. Brown and Jones opened for the president’s team to the bowling of Wilce and 8001. Both batsmen were narrowly missed by catches in the opening stages till Brown put one up from 800 l which was well taken by Sawell. One for 12. A change of bowling was made, Sawell and Gourley going on, and the latter clean bewled Thompson with the score unaltered. A few overs later Jones lifted one to Cadwallader off Sawell. Three for 14. Thomas lifted the next ball from Gourley for 6, and after adding a single returned one to Bird. Four for 21. Keyes was out l.b.w. to a rising ball from Bird, and Vidal then got a nice boundary off Carr. Carter opened with a single, at the expense of Wilce who was brought on again, Hansen taking up the attack at the other end. Vidal reached double figures with a fine drive for 4 off Hansen. Wilce sent down a maiden to Vidal, then Carter was caught by Gourley off the first ball of Howden’s next over. Six for 40. Vidal hit Tooley for a 3, and Stevens got the same bowler for two boundaries and a pair in the same over. In Gourley’s next over Vidal put one up to Cadwallader in the slips, and shortly afterwards the same bowler got both Hicks and Fleming clean bowled in one over. Mills opened with a boundary off Gourley. Runs came slowly at this stage, Wilce keeping the batsmen quiet. Cadwallader got Stevens caught by Betten with a tempting ball, and two balls later bowled Black. Mills was run out off the following delivery. A few runs later Bartlett was caught by Gourley off 800 l and the game finished. The scores were:
