Sevan boys and nine girls had been admitted, six boys and eight girls having left; and the present .roll was 279 boys and 312 girls. The attendances had been 257.6 boys and 292.6 girls. Miss D. K. Methven woulel be absent for one month on account of sickness, Miss Cowles acting to her place. During the month the school had been visited by Inspectors McNeil, Haslam and Wyn Irwin. They had received a visit also from Miss Taylor, representing the British and Foreign Bible Society. The usual fuel fund appeal was made, and resulted in £l7/7/- being collected, to which must be added So granted by the Old Boys’ Association. The result compared very favourably with that given in former years, when the present condition of affairs was considered. The Star Football Club was to be again thanked for its generous donation of two cups, to be awarded to the most improved footballers. Arrangements were in hand for Parents’ Day in August. It was expected that the school would break up for the term holidays on August 21st. The report was adopted. General. Referring to the improvements to the school grounds, Mr Preen said that excellent work was being accomplished under the supervision of the chairman and Messrs Dephoff and Dennison. Rain was now required to set the clay, and to make the grounds second to none in the district. The playing area should prove so attractive that the South Canterbury Rugby Union might want to have games played on it. He moved that the thanks of the committee be extended to the supervisors, the unemployment committee and the workmen for the good work that had been done, this being seconded by Mr Harley and carried. Mr J. W. Preen reported having visited the school, when he found the attendances large, and the school work progressing very satisfactorily. He had inspected the asphalt to the playground, and in his opinion the time was not far distant when a general top-dressing would have to be effected. Several minor matters required attention.
It was decided, on the motion of Mr Preen that the Canterbury Education Board be asked to impress on the Education Department and the Minister the necessity for subsidy of fuel fund collections in South Island schools.
Accounts amounting to £63/7/8 were passed for payment.
